Yesenia Galarza Diversity in Technology

Albert Vinicio Báez was a Mexican American Physicist who worked with and taught for the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization and is also the father of music singer Joan Baez. In 1948 Albert Vinicio Báez created the first working X-ray reflection microscope which examines living cells. Albert was inspired by his passion for science and education. When Albert was growing up it wasn't common for a Hispanic to become interested in the technology field but even with these factors of under-representation, he still went out to become famous for his achievements. To combat racial bias technology companies should hire more people of color. Hiring more people of color will help with racial injustice and inequality.

Lucia Gallardo is an entrepreneur from Honduran behind the website Emerge which is a start-up that wants to solve social problems with upcoming technologies. Lucia's company Emerge works with global commercial enterprises, governments, public institutions, organizations, and communities that solve difficult problems. Lucia's inspiration didn't come from something fictional instead it came from her family. “I had this composite person that was full of the traits that I respected in people: my dad’s integrity and my mom’s generosity and work ethic, as well as their joint joy, laughter,” - Lucia Gallardo. Being a Latin American in the STEM field is hard enough but even harder for Lucia because she is a woman. She is pushing through in a field that diversity lacks. "Anyone working in technology — engineers, data scientists, policymakers, regulators, and those who market and sell technology — needs to embrace a new way of thinking." - McIlwain said.
